You shouldnt compare yourself to others!, people might tell you.

Of course, without an explanation this is about as good advice as Just be yourself! or Just be more confident!.

Most likely it will not help at all.

So, why shouldnt we compare ourselves to others?

One reason is that there is always someone - or more likely, a bunch of folks better than you.

If you focus your mind to compare your life to other peoples lives you will always find someone new above you. And your self-esteem will take a beating.

If you get a nicer car to feel better compared to Bill Patterson next door and youll feel satisfied for a while. The next day, on you way to work, you notice that the guy whos always out walking his poodle at weekends has an even sweeter ride than you.

And if you buy a better car than him six months later then you will soon notice that the Amberson kid around the corner has made millions via some internet-contraption and now drives a Koenigsegg to school.

One of the big reasons we compare our lives is to get approval. And in general I think that wanting approval from others is a big obstacle in both personal growth and living a happy life. We may want the neighbours, friends etc. to think/say: Did you see that new car/swimming-pool/shoes? It is the coolest on the block. S/hes is moving up in the world.

A problem with comparing yourself to others and wanting approval from them is that you let others control how you feel in life. You feel bad when you are saving for the new car. You feel great when you finally have gotten enough money to drive it home. And then you feel bad again when you see that someone else has an even finer automobile.

Its a bit like being puppet and having other people pulling the strings. They limit you movements and your life. You might have some movement but the strings controls which way you are going.

How to gain that inner freedom\r The thing about lessening your need for approval is that you have give up both positive and negative approval. They are connected because when if you no longer crave positive cheers and approval from people then you will no longer have fears of not getting that approval either.

When you really start to give it up which might have to be done over time and with patience as your ego probably will want to snap back to seeking that sweet, sweet approval - you start to realise that neither of them are that important. They are really only as important as you decide they are. You are what you think you are and the world is what you think it is.

Another way to free yourself is to put in some massive, drastic action. Like, instead of driving your car, starting to ride a bicycle to work. This could catapult you right into disapproval and let you move outside your comfort zone quickly. When you first move out of your comfort zone it is uncomfortable. But after a while you get used to it and the discomfort starts to dissipate.

If you try this method you may discover that people dont care as much as you feared - maybe they are busy worrying about their own problems and what others may think of them. Or you can find that youve had a positive effect on others. Next week maybe you are not the only one riding a bicycle to work.

A third way is one Ive discovered recently though Eckhart Tolles dvd The Flowering of Human Consciousness. Its a bit counter-intuitive but bear with me.

Whenever you feel some feeling you dont want to feel, like neediness for approval from someone then dont struggle with this feeling. Dont try and keep it out. Then it will just be further entangled in your mind and possibly even strengthened.

Instead, accept the feeling. Say yes to it. Surrender and let it in.

Observe the feeling in your mind and body without judging it. If you just let it in and observe it for maybe a minute or two something wonderful happens. The feeling just vanishes. Yeah, I know, it sounds weird but give it a try.

The funny thing is when you no longer need approval from others, when you stop comparing yourself to others you will have a greater inner freedom to do what you want. You will notice positive opportunities in your life that wasnt there before.

And, as usual, dont feel too bad or beat yourself up if you snap back to wanting approval. Just get back on track the next day, keep it up and gradually you will change.

It takes a lot of confidence to start working for yourself, many self-employed people find it difficult to set their fees high enough. In Lucys case, it was a lack of self-esteem an perspective that was holding her back

Lucys throat started flushing a clear indicator that she wasnt comfortable answering my questions. And if I could make her ill at ease when she had come to me for help then it was clear that her prospective clients would soon sense her discomfort too, and decline to hire her services.

Lucy had more than 15 years experience as a beauty therapist under her belt and her previous employer had given her a glowing reference. Lucy loved her work and because of the time freedom it would give her, shed decided to become self-employed after giving birth to her son Max.

While Lucy knew she was a great beautician, shed also come to recognise that she wasnt very good at sales particularly when it came to selling her own services.

Having taken advice on how to produce the appropriate promotional literature, Lucy had optimistically thought that all she needed to do to get her business going was send out her sales letter and brochure and then sit at her desk waiting for the phone to ring.

Quickly, shed learned that there was more to promoting her business than shed realised. However, before embarking on any sales plan, we first needed to work on Lucy, who needed to change her perception of herself.

When shed been employed Lucy had been charged out at a professional rate which was particularly appropriate as the salon mainly catered for professional women who expected to pay over the odds for quality service. However, Lucy herself had been paid a very poor hourly rate, which had in turn made her undervalue herself.

If Lucy was going to the respect of the accountants and lawyers with whom she wished to work, then she was going to have to elevate her prices accordingly. Her clients expected to pay comparatively high prices believing that it elevated their own status!

It is all a matter of perception, I told Lucy. Holding up my leather handbag, I asked her to write down on a scrap of paper how much she thought Id paid for it. 200, she wrote. And if I tell you that I bought the handbag at Selfridges - how much do you think I paid for it? Quickly, she scribbled 325. \r -\r Now imagine my handbag on a table packed with bric-a-brac at a car boot sale. How much do you think my bag cost? As Lucy wrote her response of 3, she began to smile, recognising that the handbag was the same only her perception had changed.

Know that your business is a reflection of you so make sure youre right first! \r Understand your target market and set your fees accordingly. \r Recognise that if you undervalue yourself, your clients will undervalue you too. \r Believe that sometimes people enjoy paying more, believing that theyre part of an elite group! \r Remember that very often, your charging policy comes down to perception.

Have you ever taken self esteem tests? A self esteem test is designed to measure eight indicators of self esteem: degree to which you procrastinate, the number of moral rules you feel you should adhere to, your flexibility in taking risks, whether you practice positive thinking or not, the degree to which you blame yourself when things go wrong, how shy you are around strangers, the number of meaningful relationships you are able to maintain, and the level of self-acceptance you practice.

Here are some questions that would appear on a sample self esteem test:

1. How often do you procrastinate on tasks that are necessary?

2. How many times do you reject invitation to an event though you would really like to attend it?

3. How often do you tell your boss you cannot come to work because you are ill (even if you are well?

4. How often do you dawdle over decision making because you cannot make up your mind?

5. How often do you share genuine feelings with the people around you?

6. How often do you avoid doing a task that you really have to do?

7. In what parts of your life do you feel guilt or self-recrimination?

8. Do you think that you should feel more self esteem and be more comfortable with other people?

9. How often do you experience conflict between doing what you feel is necessary to do and doing what you just want to do?

10. How often have you been informed that you look at life too seriously?

11. How often are you open to constructive criticism?

12. How often do you rely on the input or advice of people in authority, even when they are strangers to you?

13. Do you believe that people think your opinions matter?

14. How often do you try to learn new knowledge so that you will gain a new perspective into the topic?

15. How long have you been a member of a group, cult or religious organization that imposes rules, beliefs or truths that you value very much?

16. How often do you use words like: everyone, all, none, nobody, never, always?

17. Do you believe that you require a lot of proof before you can assess a situation and create your own conclusions?

18. Do you have terms of endearment that you use to label things and events in your life?

19. Do you believe that if you do not achieve a desired outcome in an endeavour that it automatically makes you a failure?

20. How high are the standards in life that you set for yourself and other people?

21. How often do you apologize for circumstances not in your immediate control?

22. Do you always feel that you are being observed by other people or that they are talking about you behind your back?

23. Do you believe that the people you live with think your possessions take up too much space when they say that the house is too cramped?

24. When you compare yourself to other people, do you find that they are better than you in some way (i.e. more beautiful, smarter, sing better, etc.)?

25. Do you believe that other people fail to respect you?

26. Do you feel awkward striking up a conversation with other people, to the point that you stutter or make mistakes talking to them?

27. Do you try to stay in the background even when your actions prove that you deserve to be at center stage?

28. Do you believe other people perceive you as being distant or aloof?

Raising Self Esteem is a process, building Self Esteem is not a destination. Just like we say of success, it has to be accomplished step-by-step. It needs utmost attention, conscious effort and perseverance on our part to be developed.

The concept of Self Esteem is so important that it determines just about how we react to different events that occur in our life. This is the whole summary of life. Accepting this truth is the realization of genuine success. For when we were brought forth into this world, we all had challenges; we had problems, difficulties, and tough times. Every one has this, though in different subtle forms, some are more intense than others, but they all contribute to the make up of whom we are. It is in our various responses and reactions to lifes challenges that make all the difference between the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak, the mighty and the feeble, the intelligent and the foolish and the ordinary and the extraordinary.

While all of the low achievers go ahead to accept fate as it is, accept whatever is thrown at them, all without exception, the highly successful learn to take charge, to take responsibility and believe that the power to succeed lies inwards, within them. This is the basic concept that rules the world today. Just about how you accept responsibility directly correlates with your level of Self Esteem high, low or average. Self Esteem in itself is the feeling of being happy with your character and abilities.

High Self Esteem is manifested in a wonderful feeling of inner balance, grounded on self acceptance and a healthy, comforting self-respect towards you. High Self Esteem for instance will make us react in a positive way to the events that occur in our lives, which means that we are free from debilitating emotions and disturbing thoughts, therefore we have control over what we can do to handle every situation that arises in our life in the best possible way. Building Self Esteem is a process, here are just three things you can do to boost your Self Esteem;

Be kind to yourself. If something goes well, reward yourself. If it goes badly. Learn from your mistakes.

Write a list on things you are good at and read it many times over and over again. Autosuggestion is self suggestion, it is the only known way we can induce our subconscious. Your attitude comes from the subconscious. So if you can control it by making repeated positive words into them, then youve got a winner.

Self-esteem and physical activity go hand in hand. Our physiology and state of mind affect each other on an on-going basis. Physical activity is a very important part of developing higher self-esteem. It gives you a sense of control in your life and generates good hormones that help you develop your mental immune system as well.

One of the most intense experiences in my life was doing an actual fire walk. This is a good example of self-esteem and physical activity working together. So here I would like to share that with you though an excerpt from my book \”Firewalker.\”

The Fire Walk: \”Think all things possible, and they become so. Only in the barren earth of disbelief, does our life lay fallow…\” \”Red sparks circled their way up towards the night sky, dancing an odd tempo to the music. Then the clapping began, at first slowly, in rhythm, then faster and faster. The air, fraught with emotion, felt oddly alive. Wheelbarrows of glowing coals were pushed from the fire pits. Crewmembers in black t-shirts carefully moved through the crowd, shoveling the hot embers onto the ground in long rows. The heat pressed upwards and the smell of wood smoke filled the air. I found myself quickly at the front of the line. Nothing but an overwhelming sense of strength flooded through my mind. The red coals spread out in front of me, vibrant in the darkness; I could feel their heat on my face. I stood, feet firmly planted on the ground, and brought my fist down to meet my open palm. I had practiced this move, imagining walls falling before me, oceans parting, and all the power of existence drawing into me in that one moment. A lightness of being filled me, as if I could float over the very earth itself. \”Cool moss…\” I chanted the mantra aloud as I stepped forward with long, purposeful strides, eyes skyward. My feet hit the coals and I felt as if I were walking on a pathway of crushed velvet. It pressed softly up under my feet, barely warm to the touch. By the time I reached the end it had happened all too quickly. At that moment I became all that existed. Enveloped by the light of the fire-walk, the night sky bore silent witness to the stirring of my spirit. \”Firewalker\” the word lingered in my mind, mine and not mine. Every door lay unhinged and every path lay open. All that had ever held me back now seemed a dim shadow in a distant land.\”

This was a very physical experience that helped me rediscover that powerful part of my creativity that can perceive the limitless possibilities around us at all times.

One of the hardest ways to earn money is by begging for a buck. Most people think its an easy occupation, but they are wrong. Speaking from my experience as a beggar, I can say that it is a tough Job getting someone to voluntarily hand over a buck; there were times when I stood on a corner in ninety degree weather for twelve hours to make only thirty dollars. In order to make people feel sorry for me I had to bundle up in rags. Nobody hands over money to a well dressed beggar. The sweat produced from a hot day and the piles of rags on my body turned those rags into a soaking wet garment. The opposite was true in the winter. I had to stand on a corner in freezing weather dressed only in dirty underwear. The underwear was full of holes to complete the effect. It was difficult being in the cold for more than an hour, so I often ducked into the subway to warm up. My begging day is twelve hours and at the end of that long cold day I had accumulated just fifty bucks. The working conditions of a beggar could not be worse.

The most painful part of a beggars life came from the people that despise beggars. Cries of: Go get a job you bum were always ringing in my ears. I was often spat upon, and the wetness of saliva became a part of my face. Policemen and store owners were always chasing me away; they had me be constantly on the move. The swift blow of a policemans club on my rear end was the most discouraging part of a bad day. The store owners were more tactful, they didnt want an eyesore in front of their door, so they gave me a dollar to take my body elsewhere. My biggest fear was to be set on fire by a gang of sadistic youths. I heard stories that beggars were being doused with gasoline and burned alive. There was no way for me to avoid that nightmare; I could only hope it never happened to me.

I often asked myself why I chose such a difficult lifestyle when so many more respectful avenues were open to me, like a decent job. I always got the same answer, and that answer makes me continue being a beggar: There is no feeling as wonderful as the feeling I get when somebody hands me a buck. It is as if the universe became reborn and I was alive in a better way. In that moment I feel that I am worth something as a human being, even if its only more then a buck.

Why Self Esteem Matters
A number of years ago I worked for one of the UKs top IT companies -- a global player. We were meeting to discuss a major bid, and the room was filled with people who didnt meet often -- the most senior managers from a number of divisions. There were very few middle tier managers in the room, almost exclusively senior managers who were accustomed to being top dog. The atmosphere in that room was almost tangible. I wanted to bottle the air and ana...

Self esteem is a familiar term that is used, but what exactly does it mean?

Self Esteem is actually a system of measurement. It is a way of measuring and describing how a person thinks and feels about themselves. It is a method that attempts to measure a persons value or self worth.\r Self Esteem measures how people think about themselves in two different aspects . By using a combination of these two criteria enables a person to make a judgment about their unique value, or worth as a person. From this judgment a feeling of self esteem is usually formed.\r Here are the two criteria people commonly use to measure self esteem:\r How Lovable Am I?

Your self esteem is based on how lovable you think you are. How do you decide how lovable you are? This is usually determined by what you think other people think of you, and how much you think these other people care about you.

How Capable Are You?
\r Your self esteem is measured by what you think about the things you do. This falls into two groups; your traits and behaviours. Traits refers to attributes such as patience, being brave, clean, organized, thrifty etc. Qualities that you believe are valuable and desirable in your life. Behaviours are more specific, for example, how fast you can run 100 metres, how well you can cook dinner, or add up numbers.

As you determine your self esteem to the degree that you consider yourself lovable and capable, it will inevitably be deeply rooted in your intrinsic belief in your uniqueness, value and worth as a person. It is also, clearly a subjective opinion and strongly influenced by your personal beliefs and values as well as the influence of your family, upbringing and other significant life events.

This process of measuring your value and worth as a person poses some interesting questions for consideration.

If I were to ask you to rate your level of self esteem today with a number between 1-10, with 1 being no self esteem, you see no value in your life and are seriously considering suicide, and 10 being thinking you are the greatest person in the whole world- What would your number be?

Supposing tomorrow, you had an argument with your best friend and they didnt like you or want to speak to you ever again, would your number remain the same or be lower? If your self esteem is affected by your emotions, or the way you interact with people and how you perceive what they think of you then there is a fundamental problem. The problem is your self esteem will inevitably be unstable and easily affected by your feelings and perceptions which arise from your circumstances and the way people respond to you.

However your worth and value as a person, in reality, remains the same, irrespective of your emotions, circumstances and relationships. You are not any less of value as a person tomorrow than today or yesterday. One persons reaction or opinion cannot change your value and worth as a person. Your emotions cannot change your value as a unique human being, any more than catching a cold or someone else having a bad day can devalue your worth. Your value as a person remains constant whether the sun is shining and you are having a great day, or theres a storm outside and the events of the day are not going as well as you would like them to.\r Everyone has value and worth as a human being. We are all unique with different personalities, strengths and weaknesses, and each one of us have been created as lovable and capable people. I would like to suggest that our self esteem should not be based on our thoughts and perceptions of how we are treated or valued by other people, or by how well or badly we perform, whether to our personal standards or that of others. Rather our self esteem will grow from a deeper inner place as we discover and accept our uniqueness and value, and learn how to love and live life with purpose

Having a low self esteem can arise for many and complex reasons, and different causes may require different remedies. However, there are some common themes amongst those who suffer from a lack of self esteem, and alongside them come some partial solutions which, when brought together, may help you to start increasing your self regard. Once you start that process, it can then become a much easier task to eliminate your low self esteem altogether.

It can sometimes be very difficult to view yourself in a detached and critical way, without emotion intervening, and that is especially so if your self esteem is not at a tolerable level. However, it can be a great help if you can devote some initial time in self examination, and to find if there is a pattern to your feelings. If you can pinpoint those moments when your esteem is, in your eyes, at its lowest, and also at its highest, you will probably find some clues as to how you may improve the way you feel.

Something very important to remember is that, although you may not think too highly of yourself at any one moment, others may see you differently and more positively. In fact, everybody will see you from different angles, and with different results. You are an individual, and so is everyone else; what that means is you have a self image and a different image to everyone else you ever meet. That image is one you make into what you want, if approached in the right way and with patience.

How differently you may appear to others can be quite stunning, when compared to the way you feel. Once on a management course I had to do a mock presentation to a senior executive, based on quite a large volume of reading material. It was February in England, and I had just come back to work that day after 2 weeks of flu, commuted for over 2 hours, and felt awful. What was more overwhelming was that my personal life was in emotional turmoil, and was about all I could think of. I felt dire, but had to do the presentation, and to make it worse, have it videod and then criticised by others on the course, plus lecturers.

When I watched that video, sitting with the jury, I could not believe I was watching me. I had felt terrible, but came across as calm, knowledgeable and in full control. I never once obviously referred to my notes, whereas others had. Yet I knew there were others on the course far more able than I.

There are a couple of lessons that can be learnt from this:

Firstly, I saw for the first time how differently you may be viewed from outside of yourself, and it is always worth bearing in mind that others in your life may be thinking very positively of you.

Secondly, what carried me through on that occasion was simply my memory. My natural memory was not good, so when I had first started professional studies, I had bought a manual on improving memory. That was the only reason I could appear so confident to others, when I, quite frankly, felt like death warmed up.

What, then, can you do with those two lessons? As far as the way others see you is concerned, try to spend some time focusing on the way different people react to you, and concentrate on those who are very positive and seem to like you, and respect you. It is a privilege to be liked and respected, so you are entitled to make the most of it and appreciate it. Try to see yourself the way they see you. If you feel happiest with those people, or even one of them, then try to understand why. If the opportunity arises, have yourself recorded on video with these people in a natural setting, just a home video. Better still, make that opportunity arise. Then watch that video and learn; see yourself happy and at your height in confidence. You will not be the person you feel inside.

If you find there is a part of your life, such as work environment, where your self esteem is lowest, then work on building your confidence with the aim in mind of leaving that environment. A fresh start with people you have never even met before can be an ideal time to reinvent yourself. The important thing, though, is to make the most of the positives in your current situation, and give them greater emphasis. Over time, you can work on minimising or eliminating the negatives.

When it comes to memory, that is a skill that can be applied in just about any situation. Used discreetly and naturally, without showing off, a good memory can make a very positive impression on others, and enhance your own life in many ways.
