My father was born in a family of ten. And every year since I was little we would go on a rented bus to the family reunion. His brothers and sisters would organize a family reunion, we spend a weekend in the hotel and a wonderful time. My father has since lost three of his brothers, but the reunion still is going strong.
I can remember when I was younger. I could not wait until August got here and we were going to the reunion. I loved being around cousins that were my age. It was like a major sleep over, but you had a whole weekend together.
The planning of the reunion has been passed down to the second generation. We have charter one bus, two buses, once we had three buses. We all leave from my parents house in Delaware. We have gone to Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Canada, Poconos. This year we are doing the Big Apple, New York. It is such a great experience to be with your cousins, aunts, uncles all together all weekend. The fact is relatives have some of the same genes, therefore, you are with several people that think a like. Its wonderful, however after four days with people that all think a like. It time to move on, and look forward to next years trip.
I am now forty - something and cant wait this year for August. So I can be around my cousins, sister, brother, aunts and uncles. My youngest child is sixteen, and she is looking forward to being around her cousins. That is what it is all about, I hope I have installed in my children heads, how much fun it is, and it important to know your family. Because we are alike. And when they get older they will always keep this tradition going.
I would like to encourage family to come together. Maybe not as elaborate as ours, but just start with one day. We have lost several our family members, we do have memories of us together. Please take out the time and be with your family at least once a year.
